ANOTHER GENGHIS GIG

Gregg Lee Henry and Friends

Bruce took the Summer of 2004 off from films to catch up with life in general and his music interests in particular. One of his first endeavors was to join his buddy Gregg Henry at their favorite location, Genghis Cohen, for an entertaining night of jammin'. The following reports of the evening of fun come from Pamela McKay and Kris Rice:

from Pamela McKay:

I took a really delightful trip from the Bay Area down to L.A., where I not only was royally entertained by Gregg Lee Henry (along with pals John Lathan and Bruce Greenwood), but got the chance to catch up with Bruce, who was wonderfully gracious and especially generous with his time. Perhaps he appreciated the effort I made to get there (they really wouldn’t let me take the day off work, so I had to fly out at the zero hour) or perhaps he’s just mellowing with time and has decided to embrace my efforts, but he was really sweet and made a point of telling me how much he appreciates all I do. In particular, he told me he’s spent a lot of time looking over the site lately and he really thinks it’s a “classy” job. He thinks he’s very “lucky” to have me. So, after that, how could I help but float through the rest the weekend?

Ignoring the actual performance for the moment, here's some of what Bruce had to say:

First, he told me he just saw Riverman and he’s really happy with how it turned out; he said the director had a real vision, which helped to bring together a shoot that seem hurried as he did it. He's especially pleased with the way they delve into Bob Keppel's life and how profiling impacted on his personal relationships. We also talked about the box office success of I, Robot and Bruce joked that he’s taking full credit for it! He reports that Being Julia was pulled from The Venice Festival, (because it was to be shown out of competition and Szabo didn't want that), but Istvan has entered it into The San Sebastian Festival instead. He may or may not make TIFF this year, (where Being Julia is being shown) and he absolutely refused to tell me about his character in Being Julia. He also teased me unmercifully for calling his character Count Charles instead of Lord Charles. The good news is that he does use a British accent in it. ("All the Americans play Brits and all the Brits play Americans," he joked - which makes him an American in this context. The Brit who plays an American is Shaun Evans, whom BG said did a phenomenol job.) He also had some music news concerning Don Felder and recommended (along with wife Susan) The Notebook (where he says he was the only guy in the theater, and he wept right along with all the ladies).

Physically he’s growing a beard (it’s silvery white and Susan teased him about that), looks tanned and fit (as does Susan – they’ve clearly been enjoying the beach lately) and is growing his hair a bit – it wasn’t long but grown out enough to look very curly and full. He’s gorgeous, as usual, and was dressed about as casually as I’ve ever seen him (and that’s casual!) in faded, freyed jeans and a T shirt with red tennies.

He sang five songs with Gregg – You’re the One, Something for the Pain, a new one called (I think) Baby, You Win, and then he was called back onstage for “Back of Your Hand” and again for the encore, which was “Bite of Yours”.

I owe the success of this particular trip to Kris Rice, because I couldn't get off work and had to fly in at the last minute, where Kris picked me up at the airport and managed to get me to the gig with 20 mins to spare! In brief, we spoke to Bruce before the concert, (where I had the opportunity to introduce Kris to Bruce, who was very gracious), then I sought him out to say good-byes before going to eat, (where he waxed so eloquently about my webmaster skills - we also talked a lot about the gig), and then he later came by the table with wife Susan to chat some more before taking off. He was extremely high and pretended to steal my credit card at one point, a piece of humor completely lost on me at the time, but Kris enjoyed it!

As always, it was a incredibly wonderful night of music and entertainment. Nothing is better than watching these two great actors bounce off each other musically. For more on that part of the night, visit the Gregg pages, linked at the bottom of this page.

from Kris Rice:

It has taken my brain a couple of days to process the fact that I met Bruce... At first it was more like Pam & I had gone to a show, had a late supper and ran into some friends. It is just now starting to sink in.

Maybe it's because everything happened so fast. I picked up Pam from LAX around 7:30 and we were in a time crunch as Gregg was scheduled to go on at 8:30. We were praying for some sort of delay. Fortunately, both Pam & I had discovered a short cut. Great minds think alike I guess! We were at the restaurant in less than 30 minutes!

We got inside and as we were paying admission we could hear Bruce laffing. He was standing right behind us in the bar area with Susan and 2 other friends. We went over, everyone introduced themselves and we had a little chat.

Pam & I went inside and got our seats. I was overly concerned about making sure someone was sitting behind me... The last time I went, Bruce ended up sitting right behind me... That was just WAY too uncomfortable. So I was very relieved when someone else sat down behind me. But then these love birds ended up sitting in front of us, it made seeing Gregg a bit difficult... I guess I'm too picky huh???

Later on when Pam meantioned to Bruce about the couple in front of us nibbling ears, he asked if she was sure it wasn't him and Susan. AWWWWWWWW

Gregg went on right at 8:30. After a few numbers,John Lathan got up. John was extremely subdued.. Maybe an off nite, or maybe he was holding back for Gregg. I have seen John with another group and I saw how over the top he can get. It works well in that group. It just tends to take attention away from Gregg, when he sings with him.

After a few more songs Bruce got up for a few songs, II was glad Pam kept track of what was sung. I love watching the two of them together. It's almost magical--I'm really trying to avoid saying adorable---but they were.

Afterwards Pam and I went to get to bite to eat and talk, as we really hadn't had the time up until then. Gregg's wife stopped by and thanked us for coming. As we finished our meal, Bruce and Susan came over for a a little chat. I can't remember most of what was said... The two of them are just sooooo cute together, and so gracious. Bruce was very annimated and just so talky. I believe at one point he was talking about how in Being Julia all the American's were playing Brits, and a Brit was playing an American. Bruce did a Liverpudilian accent. The thing I remember the best, was while Pam was talking to Bruce, he snitched her credit card---then threw it back down on the table. Pam never noticed.

And Pam was getting hugs and kisses along with beard stubble. I was getting hand shakes, and a gorjus smile. I was kinda getting jealous of the beard stubble Pam getting : ) *wink* I just really wanted to rub his face.

It was an amazing night. Took Pam to her hotel near the airport, as she had a 6:30 am flight out....OUCH... The little jet setter.
